Study Guide for Exam 2--Part 2

Latin America

Be sure to read the suggestions on this page. They were written for the first exam, but certainly apply to this one as well.

Tables

Table 4.1: Which countries are large? Which are small? Where are they on the map? What is the general range of TFRs in Latin America? How do they compare with those of North America (recall table 3.1)? Find those that have low TFR, say less than 2.7. Where are they? Find those that have higher TFRs, say more than 3.5. Where are they? What do you notice about those that have high TFRs when you consider their %Urban? And those that have low TFRs, and their percent urban?

Table 4.2: Which countries have the largest PPP, say more than $7500? Which have the lowest, say less than $3000? Is there a geographic pattern to each of these? Which are growing at a fast rate (>5%)?

Table 43: Which countries have relatively high life expectancy (say, both male and female over 70)? What is the overall trend from 1960 to 1995 in terms of child mortality? How does this compare to other developing regions of the world (see paragraph under "Social Development" on page 162)? What does this table say about women and their access to education and workforce participation (see first two paragraphs under "The Status of Women" on page 165)?

Remember

You need to read the book and go over your notes. You cannot rely merely on this study guide. It is no replacement for good note-taking and good reading. Not every question on the exam is directly found in this guide. Not everything in this guide is on the exam.
