Textbook: Diversity Amid Globalization, Rowntree, Lewis, Price, & Wyckoff. Prentice Hall.

This is the first part of a two-part course (GEOG 1001 & GEOG 1003) introducing students to the basic concepts of geography. We will explore the physical world its interaction with our social, cultural, political, and economic worlds. The dynamic conflict between global diversity and the unifying effects of globalization is central to the course, and this concept is a key theme of our text, Diversity Amid Globalization: World Regions, Environment, Development.

Course evaluation: There will be three examinations and five quizzes. The three exams are listed in the course schedule found on the back of this page. The quizzes will occasionally be announced and occasionally be "pop-quizzes." The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Examination and quiz material will come from both the lectures and the book. Please attend class and read the assigned materials.

The quizzes will count as one examination, so the final formula for grading is as follows:

Exam 1: 25%
Exam 2: 25%
Exam 3: 25%
Quizzes: 25% (i.e., each quiz counts as 6.25%)
Total: 100%

At this time, a grade distribution of 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, below 60=F is anticipated, but should the grades require it, they may be curved to help adjust the distribution positively. Make-up examinations require proof of university-excused absence. Without some form of proof, there is no make-up allowed.

On examination days, every student is expected to bring one narrow Scantron sheet and a number 2 pencil. These can be purchased at the Union bookstore.

Understand that this is a university course. You will be expected to behave as a university student should. Disruptive students will be asked to leave. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.

Should you need any assistance due to learning or physical challenges, please contact me as soon as possible. Reasonable accommodation can be made. If it is related to examination procedures, please let me know before the examination.
